What’s better than a roaring fire on a wintry night? How about a roaring fire that needs no tending, requires minimal cleanup, and doesn’t leave the rest of the house freezing cold? That’s what you get with today’s gas fireplaces – glowing red embers and tall orange-yellow flames that dance and flicker around realistic looking ceramic-fiber logs.

Propane-fueled gas fireplaces can provide both a reliable source of heat and add beauty to your home’s décor as well. You have two basic options for a propane gas fireplace — gas logs or a gas fireplace insert. Both will produce heat and help a living space feel warm and inviting. And installing either one of them is less expensive than installing a new burning fireplace that requires a full-scale chimney to release smoke and ash.

So what are the advantages and disadvantages of each?

Aesthetics

One of the big differences between gas-log fireplaces and gas-insert fireplaces is the aesthetic appeal. Even though gas logs are synthetic, they appear more authentic than inserts and look very much like the solid wood logs Grandpa used to burn. Gas logs aren’tbe covered with glass doors or solid grates of any kind, giving them the look of natural wood-burning fireplaces. With a gas fireplace You can see the flames inside the inserts, but they are permanently sealed behind a glass face.

many inserts, like the Napoleon Inspiration, with its yellow dancing flames and exclusive PHAZER® log set with charcoal ember bed are so realistic, they will be mistaken for a real wood fire.

Efficiency

The two also differ in efficiency, with gas fireplace inserts being more efficient than a set of gas logs. This is because the gas inserts are covered in glass, so heat from the rest of the house does not escape up the flue. And you can get a wall thermostat to control the flame size and maintain a specific temperature setting in the room. While gas log fireplaces have similar efficiency ratings to wood-burning fireplaces, vented gas-insert fireplaces can give you as much as 75 to 99 percent of a fuel’s energy back as heat, instead of the 10 to 30 percent generated by real wood fires.

Fireplace inserts and log sets add charm, beauty and comfort to home while improving the heating efficiency of your living space.
