As gas fireplaces continue to advance their technology, they become easier to manage and operate.  However, there is one feature of a gas fireplace that raises concern for a lot of people – the pilot light.

What Is a Pilot Light?

A fireplace pilot light is a small flame inside the fireplace that is left burning to keep the main burner flames more effective. Without it, fires wouldn’t be able to run correctly leaving a homeowner with dark, cold spaces. It is imperative to keep your pilot light burning properly to maintain a warm and safe household.

How to Light Your Fireplace Pilot

A gas fireplace control panel usually has a red igniter pilot knob and control dial. The pilot knob has options “Off,” “Pilot,” and in some models, “On.” Before you light the gas fireplace, familiarize yourself with the unit. The control panel is usually around the base of the fireplace behind the fireplace screen.

Here’s how to light a pilot with a control panel:

Step 1: Turn the knob from “Off” to the “Pilot” position.

Step 2: Push in the pilot knob, which sends gas manually into the system.

Step 3:  Push the igniter button once every second until it lights. This may take multiple attempts depending on when it was last used.

Step 4: After the pilot lights, keep the pilot button held down for 15 to 30 seconds to ensure the flame stays lit.

Step 5: Release the pilot knob. If the flame stays lit, turn the knob to the “On” position.

Step 6: Adjust the flame to the desired place with the “High/Low” knob if available.

Step 7: Reattach the cover or screen over the control panel.

Your safety is paramount when it comes to gas-powered appliances. A properly burning pilot light is blue in color and slightly yellow at the top.
